Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT’s)
Medium chain triglycerides have been available for clinical use for years, were created for people with difficulty absorbing fats and have also been used with diabetics, but only in recent times have been recommended for athletes.
The MCT`s are a type of fat molecularity altered whose chain has been reduced and containing from 6 to 10 carbon atoms.
Advantages of Medium Chain Triglycerides
Because of its shorter length and absorbed metabolized differently than conventional long chain fats. The medium chain triglycerides travel directly to the liver and metabolized faster in addition are more soluble in water. Because of this, they do not require bile to break down and decompose faster.
The long chain triglycerides spend more time in the body, are more likely to be absorbed by fat cells and stored as fat. Actually the body uses medium chain triglycerides as fast as a carbohydrate to produce energy and for this reason speculated that preserves glycogen stores.
The advantage in using it as a fuel is that like all fat provides nine calories and therefore their caloric density to stimulate the effect is very large, well not stimulate insulin secretion since it is not a sugar and due to its special structure not converted in the body in adipose tissue, which in some cases, as when diet is made, can be an advantage.
Some studies have found that when mixed with carbohydrates prolonged exercise capacity, as demonstrated in a test in which the combination is administered to a cyclist who made a run 40 km, rolling at 60% of its maximum capacity. Researchers believe that this is achieved because the MCT decrease muscle glycogen oxidation during exercise and therefore preserve it.
Bodybuilders seem to draw benefits from medium chain triglycerides when included in your diet definition, that is to lose fat, because by eliminating carbohydrates compensate for the lack of fuel with this oil. In some studies it has been found that when medium chain triglycerides replace conventional fats and also the carbohydrates have been removed from the diet, the body seems better oxidize the accumulated for energy fat while oxidation of the protein is reduced, equivalent to reducing fat and preserve muscle mass.
The problem is that to get these results is necessary to use a large amount of MCT, about 50% of the calories in the diet and that is only advisable for very short periods of time, because it is not a healthy long-term diet.
Also, medium chain triglycerides are large conservative proteins in the body. When intense exercise is done on a regular basis, metabolism and calorie expenditure are higher hours after exercise. Having a protein shake with medium chain triglycerides provide additional calories, which helps release amino acids to build muscle.
If you burn a lot of calories without sufficient replacement, your body starts to break down proteins in the form of energy. Medium chain triglycerides help you get more out of your protein supplement.
Drawbacks of Medium Chain Triglycerides
MTC oil usually produces an upset stomach when ingested pure and on an empty stomach, it is best used together with food or after eating. Sometimes only well it tolerated after a period when used in small quantities that are gradually increasing as the body adapts to the product.
Short term MCT oil no more problems stomach tolerance, but it is undesirable for widespread use over long periods of time if used in large doses and replaces carbohydrates.
It can provide the substitute fuel of carbohydrates in diet periods and be useful in removing adipose tissue and to avoid the use of amino acids as an energy source.
