A simple medical examination is not enough to check if a person is allergic to gluten. The results often are negative but the symptoms are still manifest. There are many people who are sensitive to gluten and do not know, so they attribute their health problems to other pathologies.

If you want to know if you are sensitive to gluten, pay attention to these six signs of your body, usually associated with this condition.

Gluten is a mixture of different proteins found in many cereals, such as wheat, spelled, rye, oats and barley. These proteins act in the process of germination of the mass as a binder. For recipes bread or dough made with gluten free cereals they are missing the typical adhesive properties of foods with gluten.

What is Gluten?

Types of Gluten

Depending on the cereal there are two types: Prolamins and glutenins. Typical glutenins found in wheat. In the case of oats they are called avenin, and in the secalinin rye. These substances can be further subdivided: gliadin, alpha, beta, gamma and omega.

Gluten and Health Disorders

Gluten sensitivity can manifest itself very differently. In most cases various health disorders such as may occur indigestion, headache, lack of concentration and even overweight, which can not be eradicated. Gluten intolerance is not a disease that doctors take into account when making their usual diagnoses.

Many people report problems gluten sensitivity in their daily lives,
without suspecting that suffer.

Indigestion and Gluten Sensitivity

Often, after years of suffering indigestion disorders, many patients are diagnosed irritable bowel, usually associated with various health problems complex that often overlap an allergy to gluten. Another sign may be migraine, depression and difficulty sleeping.

Fibromyalgia and Gluten

In severe cases, migraine attacks and pain for no apparent reason can be confused with disease of fibromyalgia, the problem may involve taking medication prescribed for this condition which is usually antidepressants, painkillers and sleeping pills with the dangerous side effects that this may entail.

Symptoms of gluten sensitivity can affect both the digestive system, as other health disorders, such as headache or migraine

Gluten Sensitivity Analysis

When, in cases like these, they are asked the physician with an analysis to assess gluten intolerance can be a situation that the tests give a negative result. However, if a gluten free diet followed in these cases, and avoid eating foods with wheat or gluten is observed that the irritable bowel relieved considerably disappears migraine, sleep better, and after four weeks, the system digestive works best.

Gluten intolerance testing

The analyzes are usually performed to assess gluten allergy limited only to evaluate a single `substance` usually concerning gliadin alpha or beta type (ignoring the gamma and omega type). Since gluten also encompasses these substances, they can cause adverse reactions. Consequently, it is possible to suffer from gluten intolerance and medical tests give a negative result.

The appearance of certain symptoms by eating foods containing wheat, may indicate that there  is sensitivity or allergy to gluten

Celiac Disease Symptoms

The diagnosis of celiac disease is quite safe, since diagnosing celiac disease test biopsy and blood markers, whose symptoms are very clairvoyant is performed:  diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss and lack of nutrients.

Gluten sensitivity symptoms

They include: indigestion, headache, fatigue, sleep disorders, difficulty concentrating, ADHD, ADD, autism symptoms, mood swings, dizziness or overweight. And also can cause or trigger autoimmune diseases among which include, for example, chronic thyroiditis disease or rheumatoid arthritis.

Wheat allergy occurs when the body mistakenly recognizes wheat protein as an invader can cause some trauma or damage.

Wheat allergy

Wheat allergy usually manifests with health problems since childhood. Furthermore, wheat contains, besides gluten other proteins, which can also cause allergies. Among its symptoms: from eczema to epilepsy.

Wheat allergy tests

The diagnosis is made by testing IgE antibodies typical of allergies. Typical signs usually manifest within minutes of consuming the corresponding allergen, in this case wheat.

In the case of gluten sensitivity, the signs may take several days to show up, so for doctors is harder to recognize allergy patient.

Gluten sensitivity Unbeknownst

Celiac disease and wheat allergy are rare phenomena. While signs of celiac disease are very clear, those of gluten sensitivity are more diffuse, so it can affect many people who are unaware they suffer from this condition, because their signs are similar to other diseases.

Six Gluten intolerance symptoms

To help you recognize the signs of gluten intolerance, we will describe below the six most common symptoms of gluten sensitivity that can guide you when you know if you suffer lactose intolerance. In some cases, these signs manifest for a few hours, in other cases remain for weeks and, in cases, more serious become chronic.

1. Indigestion

Here we can include bloating, abdominal cramps and bloating, constipation and diarrhea. Doctors usually make the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome when these signs are present or not is no physical cause that produces.

The most common symptom of gluten intolerance are indigestion.

2. Migraine and depression

There seems to be some relationship between food and health disorders such as migraine or headaches, as it often occurs in patients who are prone to fluctuations in the levels of blood sugar when they take foods that contain a lot of sugar. The same applies to sensitive foods high in histamine (cured cheese, wine, smoked fish, etc.) or those who do not tolerate caffeine patients.

In the book `Syndrome Gluten: A neurological disease,` written by Dr. Rodney Ford, head of the Unit of Gastroenterology and allergies Hospital in New Zealand, it is said `that gluten, in the case of patients with celiac disease as those who have intolerance to gluten damages the nervous system and can trigger neurological` symptoms in the book can be read verbatim as follows:

`Gluten causes a reaction between the antibodies combined, serum sickness and neurological damage. This damage can occur in an imbalance of the autonomic nervous system in cerebellar ataxias (movement disorders that originate in the brain), hypo tension (low blood pressure), and developmental problems and learning disorders in children and symptoms of depression, migraine and headache`

`It is useless to try to explain the specific intestinal damage suffered by sensitive to gluten, but it is known that gluten is to blame for these signs in cases of intolerance to gluten.`

Several studies have shown that gluten intolerance is a disease that can cause headaches and neurological disorders.

3. Tingling and numbness in the arms and legs

Symptoms such as dizziness, loss of balance and muscle weakness, tingling or numbness in the arms and legs indicate alterations in the nervous system and, therefore, may be due to an intolerance to gluten.

4. Autoimmune Diseases

Some autoimmune diseases such as chronic thyroiditis or rheumatoid arthritis, may indicate a gluten sensitivity or may aggravate the signs of these diseases

5. Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is not itself a disease but a symptom complex whose cause is unknown. As is the case with irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia diagnosis sometimes it occurs because doctors find no explanation for the signs presented by the patient.

It is significant that the term `fibromyalgia` derived from `Fibro` meaning connective tissue; `Myo` means muscle; and `Algia` meaning pain.

How can we find out if your symp more can be derived from an intolerance to gluten?

The only way is to change the diet and check for signs excluding gluten decrease without antidepressants, muscle relaxants and pain killers.

Study in patients with fibromyalgia

In a clinical study conducted in 2005 on patients suffering from fibromyalgia the relationship between chronic fatigue syndrome and food intolerance demonstrated. The conclusion was that increased deposition of IgG antibodies typical of patients with fibromyalgia may be due to allergies against food, which, in any case, have been shown to worsen his condition.

Conventional medicine also supports the connection between IgG antibodies and certain chronic diseases, but does not provide a change of diet that can solve this problem.

Study procedure

During this study, they were studied 68 patients suffering from fibromyalgia for 10 years. After 8 weeks, which these patient were removed from their diet foods with gluten, only 25% of them experienced muscle pain, while at the beginning of the study this pain I suffered 66%. Initially, 63% slept very badly, and after 8 weeks of a diet without gluten, suffered only 22%. At baseline, 54% expressed joint pain and after 8 weeks, it suffered only 29%.

Study Conclusions

In these cases, patients not only carried out a gluten free diet but also eliminated other foods that were problematic for them personally based on their test IgG. However, since gluten is one of the most common allergens, worth it – especially for people who have done any test IgG – initially follow a diet free of gluten and milk. After studying other symptoms, such as migraine, depression, irritable bladder, back pain, painful menstruation, tingling, numbness in the feet, tinnitus, dryness of mucous membranes, and hands, feet or face swollen improved considerably

6. Constant fatigue

Some people suffer from constant tiredness, which can be diagnosed the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). As is the case with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue signs are very complex. For alternative medicine CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) is not a disease in itself but a set of signs whose cause is unknown.

Gluten and Tiredness

In the clinical trial we noted above, 60% of patients had fatigue during the day and 42% suffered weakness. After removing gluten from their diet, after 8 weeks, only 22% had fatigue, and 17% weakness.

The constant tiredness is one of those symptoms may disappear quickly in cases of intolerance to gluten, once you eliminate it from your diet

Do you suffer gluten sensitivity?

If you suffer from one or more of the symptoms described, both continuous and intermittent, and usually consume foods containing gluten, it is possible that your body has gluten intolerance.

You may experience other different signs that have described that can obey your gluten intolerance

How to find out if you are gluten intolerant?

Avoid eating all foods that may contain gluten for 60 days. It is therefore not enough to stop eating bread and pasta containing gluten. Remember that gluten is also included as additive food in many processed products. So carefully read the labels of foods you buy and if you go to a restaurant, you have to order a dish that does not contain gluten.

Costs may give up the foods you regularly use, and can even believe that wholemeal bread is always very healthy.

Test results Gluten Intolerance

If you continue, after the test, the same symptoms, most likely not suffer gluten intolerance (unless you have continued to use processed products still contain gluten).

If, after this test, we note that the symptoms have disappeared, most likely to suffer intolerance to gluten, so it is advisable that you adopt a diet free of gluten.

The Quinoa is an alternative to wheat for celiac patients.
